Discover the Wysburg Castle Ruins: A Hidden Medieval Gem in Thuringia

Tucked away in the peaceful forests near Weisbach, Thuringia, the Wysburg Castle Ruins offer visitors a fascinating glimpse into Germany's medieval past.

Also known as Hohenwaldsburg or Obere Walsburg, the castle was built in the late 13th century by the Vögte of Gera. Perched high on the Schlosskuppe hill, it occupied a strategic position that allowed its rulers to monitor and defend the surrounding region.

The fortress was constructed during a time of intense regional rivalry. Its primary purpose was to protect the territory from neighboring powers, particularly the influential Counts of Schwarzburg. However, despite its strong defensive position, the castle's history was relatively short-lived.

Around 1354, during the Vogtland War, the Wysburg fell after a siege in which attackers used powerful trebuchets to launch massive stone projectiles at its walls. Some of these stones weighed more than 80 kilograms, eventually breaking through the castle's defenses and bringing an end to its military significance.

Today, the ruins provide a peaceful contrast to their turbulent history. Visitors can reach the site via a scenic hiking trail from Weisbach and explore the remaining stone walls while enjoying beautiful views of the surrounding countryside.

The former outer bailey offers a perfect spot for a picnic, while history enthusiasts can let their imagination wander back to the days when knights, soldiers, and siege engines dominated the landscape.

For those interested in learning more, the nearby Wysburg-Haus Museum in Weisbach showcases artifacts discovered during archaeological excavations. The collection includes medieval ceramics, iron tools, and even a replica of a trebuchet, helping visitors better understand daily life during the castle's heyday.
