✈️ Long Layovers at the Airport? You Might Be Missing an Opportunity
Have you ever booked a flight with a long layover just to save a bit of money?
Let’s be honest… I think we’ve all done it at some point. We trade hours of waiting at the airport for a cheaper ticket. And then comes the big question: what do you actually do with that time?
This blog comes from my own personal experience. And no, you don’t have to follow my “crazy idea” 😄… but maybe after reading this, you’ll think twice next time.
For me, there’s one thing I’ve learned: I never miss an opportunity to discover a new city. Today, everything is just a click away. With a bit of planning, you can book tickets, reserve a city tour, or organize a small experience directly from your smartphone.
A few years ago, on one of my first solo trips, I found myself in exactly that situation. I was flying with an American airline, with a layover in Chicago before continuing to Paris. I had around six hours to wait at the airport. Six hours might sound like a long time… but it’s actually very little if you decide to step out and explore the city.
My decision was simple: I looked for a place to store my luggage, booked a city tour, and headed straight into the city. I chose one of those hop-on hop-off buses, which is a very practical way to see the highlights when you don’t have much time. I got off at the famous Sears Tower, went all the way up to the top… and then made my way back to the airport in time for my next flight.
That’s when I realized something very simple: a long layover doesn’t have to be wasted time. It can turn into a small adventure within your journey.
Of course, this isn’t for everyone. If you’re traveling alone or as a couple, I highly recommend it. If you’re traveling with small children, it’s something to think about more carefully. Traveling as a family comes with a different rhythm — more breaks, more unpredictability, and more logistics. But every family knows their own dynamic, and with good planning, it might still be possible to enjoy a short excursion before your next flight.
If you decide to make the most of a layover, there are two key things: plan ahead and know exactly what you want to do. Today, it’s easier than ever to organize everything in advance and make sure every minute counts.
In the end, it all comes down to a simple choice: you can spend hours walking around the same duty-free shops… or you can turn that time into another memory from your trip.
Because sometimes, the best experiences are the ones that were never part of the original plan.
